How Photography Started And Its Continuous Advancement In This Evolving World

By Conrad Albert

Aristotle once quoted that "a soul never thinks without a picture". That is why photography has always been a part of the lives of hundreds of people around the globe. Capturing special events or people on photographic paper is one of the best ways to remember these "specials" of one's life.

Photography refers to the technique by which pictures or images are recorded on a light sensitive material by its reaction to light or similar radiation. On the other hand, the device used in photography, today, is called a camera. Prior to the invention of camera, photography has been manifested on cave paintings. These paintings manifested that men have long desired to record themselves, their activities, as well as the environment around them on.

The basic principles of optics and the camera were first described by the Chinese and Greek philosophers during the 5th and 4th Centuries B.C. Nonetheless, the first known camera was invented by Ibn al-Haytham in the 11th Century and was called the Camera Obscura. This device was then used only for viewing and drawing purposes and not for making photographs. The first successful photograph printed on a photographic paper was created in 1827 by Joseph Nicephore Niepce. Over the years that followed, various experiments have been made to improve the quality of photographs and the way of capturing images.

Today, from those successful experiments, the industry of photography has been improved significantly. Black and white photography, documentary photography, macrophotography, and advertising photography are among the few popular categories of this industry today. Among these enumerated categories, the oldest and most popular is black and white photography, which is also often referred to as B&W. This category aims to create photographs with a timeless and regal look by working only on black and white colors. On the other hand, documentary photography aims to document political or social eras by telling stories with images. Alternatively, pictures takes at a close range to capture the essence of the subjects is the aim of macrophotography while advertising photography aims to capture photographs that will be used for advertising and marketing purposes.

With the advancements in technology, cameras, which are the main tools used in photography to capture images on photographic paper or other digital formats, also now come in a variety of types. The two major types of camera today are point and shoot cameras and SLR cameras. Point and shoot cameras refer to those tools where the camera is pointed at something and the shutter is tripped to capture the image. These cameras are easy to carry and are often small and compact. Single Lens Reflex, which characterizes SLR cameras, on the other hand, refers to how the light enters the camera. These types of cameras produce better quality photographs than P&S image capturers.

In today's fast-paced world, various memorable events in one's life can be easily forgotten. Nonetheless, in today's digital world, images on photographic paper or on videos are the popular ways of storing one's memorable life events.
